Unknown caller names? It’s not a spam or phone glitch:Government started testing Truecaller-like CNAP system to reduce fraud calls, especially for the elderly

If you start seeing unfamiliar names on your screen when someone calls, names that aren’t saved in your contacts, don’t panic. It’s not a bug or a phone issue. This is part of the Indian government’s new CNAP system, which is currently being tested in selected regions. Telecom operators are slowly rolling out this feature. The aim is to reduce spam and fraud calls without needing any third-party apps. With CNAP, your phone will show the caller’s Aadhaar-verified name before you pick up.

What is CNAP? CNAP stands for Calling Name Presentation. It is a government-backed caller ID system. When a call comes from an unknown number, the name linked to the Aadhaar card will appear first on the phone. After that, the name you have saved in your contact list will appear. For example, if you have saved your mother’s name as ‘Mom’, when a call comes, the Aadhaar-linked name will appear first, then ‘Mom’. This system directly takes names from SIM registration records. This system is different from Truecaller because Truecaller runs on users’ crowdsourced data, which can sometimes be incorrect. However, everything in CNAP is based on government verification. This means no third-party app will be needed. This will be a default feature. If a user does not want this feature, they will be able to deactivate it. Telecom companies conducted trials for this service in the Mumbai and Haryana circles last year. TRAI approved the system last month Telecom regulator (TRAI) and DOT (Department of Telecommunications) approved the implementation of a new system on October 29 to prevent fraud from mobile calls.
Large telecom companies like Jio, Airtel, Vodafone-Idea are installing it on their networks. This plan is to be rolled out across the country. A pilot project is currently underway in some states. What will be the benefit to users? This system will increase trust in unknown calls. Spammers and fraud callers will be easily identified. No app download is required, it will work directly on the phone. Safety will increase, especially for the elderly and women. Transparency will come in calls, which will boost confidence levels. In the long term, the telecom sector will become more trusted. Also read: Don’t open the ‘Wedding Invitation’ card on WhatsApp
