Kids addicted to YouTube shorts?:Parents can now set time limits or freeze kids’ Shorts access on YouTube with new tool

YouTube is rolling out upgraded parental controls to help parents manage how much time their kids spend watching Shorts the fast, swipe-based videos similar to TikTok and Instagram Reels. Time limits for endless scrolling The new feature lets parents control how long teens can scroll Shorts. Options include blocking Shorts entirely or setting limits of 15, 30, or 45 minutes. Parents can also extend these limits to one hour or two hours, although custom time settings aren’t allowed. YouTube suggests parents might use these controls to reduce distractions during study time or offer extra watch time as entertainment during long car rides. Bedtime and break reminders YouTube is also improving its “supervised accounts” with custom Bedtime and Take a Break reminders. These reminders are automatically enabled for all kids, and parents can adjust them as needed. Faster parent switching and settings To make things smoother, YouTube is redesigning its login page for users with children. The upgrade will make it easier to switch between a parent’s personal account and a child-friendly feed. This means quicker access to parental settings and a faster way to hand over the device for safe viewing. YouTube says this switch will take “just a few taps,” though the new design hasn’t been shown yet. Guidelines for teen-friendly content For creators, YouTube is also introducing new rules to encourage “fun, age-appropriate, high-quality” content for teens. Similar guidelines already exist for content made for kids under 13. To build this new framework, YouTube partnered with organizations like the American Psychological Association and Boston Children’s Hospital.
