Google launches ‘Emergency Location Service’ to India:Starting with Uttar Pradesh, the feature automatically shares caller’s location with emergency services when dialing 112

Google has officially launched its Emergency Location Service (ELS) in India for compatible Android smartphones. The new feature helps emergency services find users faster by automatically sharing their precise location when they make an emergency call or send an emergency text. Uttar Pradesh has become the first state in India to activate this service. However, ELS works only when state authorities integrate it with their local emergency response systems. What is Android Emergency Location Service (ELS)? Emergency Location Service is a built-in safety feature on Android phones. When someone dials an emergency number or sends an emergency SMS, ELS automatically sends location details to responders.
Instead of depending only on what a caller can explain, especially in panic situations, ELS uses GPS, Wi-Fi, and mobile network signals to pinpoint the phone’s location. According to Google, ELS can often locate a user within about 50 metres. It may also share helpful details like the phone’s language setting, making communication easier for emergency operators. The service already works in 60+ countries and is now live in India. Uttar Pradesh gets it first in India Uttar Pradesh is the first Indian state to fully operationalise ELS. The system has been integrated by the Uttar Pradesh Police, with technical support from Pert Telecom Solutions Pvt Ltd. During pilot testing over the past few months, ELS supported more than 20 million emergency calls and messages across the state. Google says the system even shared location data when calls dropped early helping emergency teams still reach people in need. Privacy, safety, and availability Google has stressed that privacy protections are built into ELS: ELS is free to use and works on Android phones running Android 6.0 or newer.
