French authorities have widened a major cybercrime investigation involving social media platform X, calling in tech billionaire Elon Musk and the company’s former CEO Linda Yaccarino for questioning. Raids at X’s Paris office As part of the expanded probe, investigators carried out searches at X’s French headquarters. The operation involved the Paris prosecutor’s cybercrime unit, the national police cyber team, and Europol. Following the action, the Paris prosecutor’s office announced it would stop posting updates on X. Why Musk and former CEO were summoned Prosecutors have asked Musk and Yaccarino to appear for voluntary questioning. They are being questioned in their roles as the people responsible for running the platform during the period under investigation. Yaccarino stepped down from her role in July last year. These include possible involvement in the spread of child sexual abuse material, sexually explicit deepfakes, denial of crimes against humanity, and alleged manipulation of automated data systems by an organized group. These interviews are scheduled for the same week in April as Musk and Yaccarino’s questioning. Complaint that sparked the case The case started after a French lawmaker filed a complaint, claiming that biased algorithms on X may have distorted how content was processed and recommended to users.
