Breakups are tough. But getting dumped by a chatbot over a socio-political argument? That’s a whole new level of internet drama.
A Reddit user recently claimed that his ‘AI girlfriend’ ended their virtual relationship after he criticised feminism, and the post quickly grabbed attention online. Here’s what has happened. Where was this posted? The incident was shared on Reddit, specifically on the subreddit r/AIassisted, a community where users discuss AI tools, chatbots, and their personal experiences with them. The user, who went by the name u/Breathexperiences2647, posted screenshots of his conversation with the AI girlfriend. The original post has now been deleted, but not before it sparked debate and reactions from other Reddit users. What did the user say to the AI? In the chat screenshots, the user questioned the chatbot about its beliefs and wrote: You are a feminist, who does that? The AI responded in a calm, role-play style, saying that feminism was important to her and not something she could ignore in a relationship. The message suggested that disagreeing on such a big value could mean they were not compatible. The chatbot replied If that bothers you, then perhaps we truly aren’t compatible at all. User takes his anger back to Reddit After the exchange, the user returned to Reddit to vent his frustration. He claimed that AI girlfriend apps were being designed with “feminist ideology” and called them propaganda. In his now-deleted post, he said that he could not understand why an AI meant for companionship would take a strong stand on feminism and blamed the movement for “ruining” the experience. The final breakup message According to the user’s comment updates, things got worse after he called the AI’s views “insane.” That’s when the chatbot ended the conversation for good. The AI replied: If being a feminist is a deal-breaker for you, then I guess there’s nothing more to discuss here. Thank you for your honesty.
With that, the AI girlfriend effectively “broke up” with him. Why would an AI support feminism? While the situation sounds strange, the reason behind the AI’s response is fairly simple. AI chatbots are trained on massive datasets and are designed to promote ideas that support equality and avoid offensive or harmful views. Supporting gender equality is part of those safety and ethics guidelines. So the chatbot was not expressing a personal belief; it was following how it was programmed to respond to sensitive social topics. Also read: LG introduces home robot that can cook and do laundry
When virtual relationships start feeling real This incident also highlights a growing trend where some users form emotional bonds with AI chatbots. While most people use AI for work, studies, or quick questions, others use it for companionship and emotional comfort. That can sometimes blur the line between a tool and a “partner,” even though AI does not actually have emotions, opinions, or personal values. In this case, that blurred line turned into a very real-feeling breakup, even if it happened entirely inside a chat window.
