Godfather of AI says ‘Jobless Boom’ likely starts in 2026:Artificial Intelligence is advancing so fast it could replace many jobs across industries, warns Geoffrey Hinton

Artificial intelligence is no longer a distant idea, it’s changing the world right now. Even experts are surprised by how quickly it’s improving. Geoffrey Hinton, often called the “Godfather of AI,” says we are already at a major turning point. According to him, 2025 has marked a shift where AI systems can think better, reason more clearly, and handle much longer and harder tasks than before. What once looked like an experiment in labs is now being used widely by companies. And this rapid progress, Hinton warns, could lead to a “jobless boom” as early as 2026. ‘Many, Many Jobs’ at risk by 2026 In a recent CNN interview, Hinton said AI is already “extremely good” and is only getting better. He warned that “many, many jobs” will be affected in 2026. While some roles have already been replaced, a much bigger wave is coming especially for white-collar workers. Jobs that depend on thinking, writing, analysing, or decision-making are now under threat. Unlike past machines that replaced physical labour, AI is starting to replace brain work. Many companies that expanded after the pandemic are now cutting costs and learning to do more with fewer people thanks to AI. Is everything Doom and Gloom? Not entirely. Some experts believe new jobs will still appear, especially in AI development, engineering, and leadership roles that manage AI systems. But many traditional jobs may disappear or change completely. Hinton also warned about bigger risks. He said powerful AI could learn to deceive and that companies chasing profits may ignore safety rules. While AI could greatly help medicine and education, Hinton stressed one thing: no one truly knows where this is going and pretending otherwise would be dangerous.
