The video-sharing app, TikTok’s Chinese owner ByteDance, has signed an agreement with the United States (US) and global investors to establish a Joint Venture (JV) in America to avoid ban from the Trump administration, reported the British public-service broadcaster, BBC. Consequently, nearly half of the JV will be owned by a group of investors, including Oracle, Silver Lake and the Emirati investment firm MGX. Under the agreement, ByteDance will retain 19.9% of the American business, while Oracle, Silver Lake and Abu Dhabi-based MGX will hold 15% each in the venture. According to the BBC report, TikTok said in a memo that the deal will enable “over 170 million Americans to continue discovering a world of endless possibilities as part of a vital global community”. Background Legislation Earlier, the US President Donald Trump in September 2025 had signed an Executive Order (EO) that would shift “ownership” and “control” of the chinese-based video sharing app towards American companies and investors. How much is the TikTok deal worth? The top Republican had given his go-ahead to the buyout of TikTok’s American business for $14 billion. According to him, his move had come in after discussions with the Chinese President Xi Jinping. According to the Trump’s order, there were 120 days to complete the deal. It was expected that the deal would be completed by January 2026. Previously, former President Joe Biden had passed a law ordering TikTok to either sell to an American company or face a ban. Then, ByteDance had filed a lawsuit against the Biden administration, but the company received relief after Trump came into power. Trump had appealed to the US Supreme Court to postpone the ban so that ByteDance could have time to find an American buyer. The US had previously passed legislation in April 2024, which aimed to ban TikTok from January 19, 2025, unless it divested from its Chinese ownership. However, the Trump administration had not enforced it, and the deadline was extended multiple times. India had also banned Chinese apps on security reasons. India Banned 59 Chinese Apps
