If 2025 had a movie trailer, the main characters wouldn’t be superheroes or world leaders. This year’s spotlight belongs to the people building the machines that are starting to think like us. Time Magazine didn’t pick a single person for its Person of the Year; it picked the “Architects of AI.”
And honestly, it makes sense. These are the minds pushing humanity into a new era… whether we’re ready or not.
Why “Architects of AI”? Time Magazine believes no other group shaped the world more in 2025 than the people powering the AI revolution.
Instead of celebrating the technology itself, the magazine chose to honour the humans behind it, the leaders who imagined it, built it, and unleashed it into our daily lives. Editor-in-Chief Sam Jacobs explained the decision clearly: No one had as great an impact in 2025 as the individuals who imagined, designed, and built AI. These leaders aren’t just running companies; they’re steering a technology that’s now influencing how we work, learn, travel, communicate, and even how we think.

Who made it to the cover? Time featured eight influential figures on one of its 2025 covers, a creative recreation of the iconic “Lunch Atop a Skyscraper” photograph. The lineup ranges from the “godmother of AI” to distant cousins who now lead rival chip giants. Here’s who they are and why they matter: 1. Jensen Huang – CEO, Nvidia The man powering AI’s hardware boom. Nvidia’s chips are the backbone of almost every major AI model today, making Huang one of the most influential figures in tech. 2. Sam Altman – CEO, OpenAI The person behind ChatGPT, a tool now used by nearly 800 million people every week. Altman helped make AI mainstream and accessible. 3. Elon Musk – CEO, Tesla xAI Whether building electric cars or launching rockets, Musk has leaned heavily into AI. His company xAI, is now competing directly with major AI players. 4. Mark Zuckerberg – CEO, Meta Zuckerberg turned Meta into an AI-first company. Its AI chatbot and generative tools are now embedded across WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook. 5. Lisa Su – CEO, AMD Su has driven AMD to the frontlines of the AI chip race, challenging Nvidia with competitive, energy-efficient alternatives. Interestingly, Su and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang are actually distant relatives, first cousins once removed.
They share Taiwanese roots, connected through Su’s maternal grandfather, who is Huang’s uncle.
Despite this family link, they grew up separately and only crossed paths later as adults in the tech world, eventually rising to lead two of the industry’s toughest rival chip companies. 6. Demis Hassabis – CEO, Google DeepMind A pioneer in AI research. Hassabis is behind breakthroughs in protein folding, robotics, and next-gen AI systems. 7. Dario Amodei – CEO, Anthropic A former OpenAI leader is now building “safer AI” through Claude. Amodei’s startup is among the fastest-growing AI companies in the world. 8. Fei-Fei Li – AI pioneer founder, World Labs Often called the “godmother of AI,” Li’s work in computer vision shaped modern AI. She recently launched World Labs to build more human-centered AI tools. Together, these leaders control companies worth hundreds of billions of dollars, and they’re directing the future of intelligent machines. Why did 2025 become a turning point? Experts say 2025 is the year AI fully enters everyday life, faster than the internet or mobile phone revolutions.
People now: Many use AI daily without even realising it. At the same time, critics worry about: A tradition of honouring groups, not just people This isn’t the first time Time Magazine has honoured a collective instead of a single individual. This year’s choice follows that same pattern. Just as the computer symbolised the digital revolution in 1982, the “Architects of AI” symbolise today’s leap into intelligent technology. Two covers that capture the moment Time released two covers this year: Both covers show how AI is no longer just a futuristic concept. It’s being built in real time, and the people behind it are visibly shaping society. World of AI Time’s decision is not just about celebrating innovators. It’s a reminder that AI is changing the world at a speed humanity has never seen before, and the people building it now have unprecedented influence. As the magazine put it:
“For delivering the age of thinking machines, for wowing and worrying humanity, the Architects of AI are TIME’s 2025 Person of the Year.”
